Design

Design, in particular industrial design, is a largely 20th-century phenomenon. The first industrial designer is often considered to be German architect Peter Behrens, who was heavily influenced by the 19th-century English designer and poet William Morris and by the Arts and Crafts movement.

German designers are still setting standards for innovation in the field of industrial design.

Germany

  • The German Design Council
The German Design Council (Rat für Formgebung) was founded as an initiative of the German Federal Parliament in 1953 to meet the growing need of the business world for information about design. Today, the German Design Council is one of the world’s leading competence centres for communication and know-how transfer in the design field.
  • Design Universities in Germany
Germany is renown for its excellent design universities. There are specialized fields including industrial design, visual communication and interior design.
  • Vitra Design Museum
The Vitra Design Museum is internationally active as a cultural institution that has made a major contribution to the research and popular dissemination of design. The Museum presents a broad spectrum of topics on design and culture, with a special emphasis on furniture and interior design.
  • Sustainable, Efficient and Long-Lasting – Eco-Design
“Geiz ist geil” (cheap is cool!) is one of the best known advertising slogans in Germany and tries to steer consumers towards quick and apparently cheap buys. Eco-designers, on the other hand, embrace a quite different credo. Their products have their price, but you get what you pay for.
