Klazz Brothers: Classic Meets Cuba

The Klazz Brothers have created a new musical sensation—by combining their jazzed-up classics with infectious rhythms of Cuba. In Classics Meet Cuba, the celebrated masters of classical improvisation from Germany join forces with Cuba’s finest percussionists. Their concerts and recordings have won critical acclaim worldwide as well as a Grammy nomination.

The extraordinary success of Classic Meets Cuba began in 2000, when the classics-jazz crossover trio The Klazz Brothers teamed up with two of Cuba’s most outstanding percussionists. To everyone’s surprise, the combination of the two different musical cultures blended naturally and spontaneously. Since this legendary encounter, Klazz Brothers and Cuba Percussion quickly became a worldwide musical sensation.

German Film Festival 2011

German play “Before Sunrise (“Vor Sonnenaufgang”)

NAFA Department of Theatre is performing Gerhart Hauptmann’s play “Before Sunrise” (“Vor Sonnenaufgang”). It was Gerhart Hauptmann’s first play and produced in 1889 at the German Free Theater. The playwright was acknowledged as the beginning of an important new literary movement for Germany.

The play is directed by German Director Friederike Felbeck, who used to be the resident director at the famous Theatre an Der Ruhr and also the resident fellow at the Institute of Theatre Studies at Free University of Berlin 2010).

The performance is in Mandarin with English subtitles.

Volkswagen 2011 Women’s World Cup in Singapore

The Singapore Table Tennis Association, with the support from Singapore Sports Council, has brought the prestigious Volkswagen 2011 Women’s World Cup to Singapore!

This year’s edition presents a field of world class players from Singapore, Japan, Korea, China and the different continents competing for the prestigious title. Germany top ranked table tennis player Wu jiaduo (world Ranking No.14) is primed to be included in the tournament.

Already in its 4th year, Singapore’s International A Cappella Festival has established itself as a month-long vocal extravaganza featuring top A Cappella groups from many countries and various styles!

GESS presents: Lecture by German writer Charlotte Kerner

In September 2011 German writer Charlotte Kerner’s new book ‘Jane reloaded’ (Beltz & Gelberg, Weinheim) was published. Just like her Bestseller ‘Blueprint’, ‘Jane reloaded‘ is a science fiction novel with a very special mix of facts and fiction. Themes of this Factasy are anthropology and evolution. In October Ms. Kerner will visit the German European School Singapore to work with the students and on 19th October the school organizes a public lecture (in German), during which the author will talk about her new book and the process of writing it. Everybody is cordially invited to this event.

Charlotte Kerner was born in Speyer, Germany, in 1950. After studying economics and sociology in Mannheim she spent a year in Canada (1976) and a year in China (1978). Her experiences in China inspired her first book, ‘Jadeperle und großer Mut’, on which she collaborated with a sinologist. Charlotte Kerner has worked exclusively as a writer and journalist since 1980. She writes novels primarily for adolescent readers, often on the lives of women and on issues related to medicine, research and the sciences, and has received many awards for her works. Since 1979 Charlotte Kerner has lived with her family in Lübeck, Germany.

Die Deutsche Sphäre is the official NUS Students’ Language Society. It promotes and encourages lasting interest, knowledge and appreciation of the German language and culture through social activities, cultural events, excursions and other activities.

Der Treffpunkt @ NTU
Der Treffpunkt @ NTU comprises of a group of Nanyang Technological University students learning the German language. It aims to promote German language and culture by bringing together German learners and speakers for interaction.

Der Treff German Club (NYP)
Through regular activities, Der Treff German Club at Nanyang Polytechnic promotes German language and culture. Activities range from dance lessons, performances and baking sessions to watching German movies.
